Plywood Boat DIY Plans, Kit Production and/or Boat Building business.

 

 

I have been running my business - STANLEY SmallCraft - for over 35 years initially designing 30 canoes and dinghies from which I developed DIY plans, plywood kits, complete boats. A few more designs were added over the next few years and I settled on 16 canoe designs and 22 dinghy designs which I kept on developing and improving till now. I also ran boat building courses using my designs where people came to me and built their boat then took it home with them.

 

However, I am now at retirement age and after an illness 5 years ago, I sadly, stopped building my boats. I also slowed the kit production and sales side of the business, slimmed down to sole trader basis mostly for health reasons. I now have other manageable project interests I want to get working on.

 

The package I am offering is all my current 16 canoe and 22 dinghy designs with the full copyright licence to produce and sell as DIY plans, plywood kits and ready built boats. It includes a CNC machine, lead screw driven and very accurate with new software, and a set of new cutters that I use to cut the kits. The plans drawings and PDF plans manuals including the pictures and other written material that normally goes with them and the kit. is also included. All the with DXF files to produce the cutting files for the CNC machine along with the software required. Finally, I will provide a simple 3 - 5 day boat building course for you to learn the CNC machine, software, how to cut the kits and how to build them using the two methods these boats are built with. Also, at least 1 years support and advice. The items under "Paul's Boatshed" are NOT included in this package although some of the accessories can be.

 

Each design has been sold over at least the past 25 years have been developed over the years through experience and customer feedback to make building from them as easy as possible for your customers either by the plans or the kit. I have a couple of general build manuals in the type of build for that design which I may also include plus a couple of videos. The manuals can easily be changed to your brand. Also included is 2 simple kayak designs which I used to produce as kits for a charity project. They were sold as complete kayaks too but there are no kit build instructions or DIY plans for them at this time.

 

All the designs are tried and tested having been sold as DIY pans, kits and ready built boats for 25 years, a few for over 30 years, so there is great potential to easily rebuild the plans and kit sales plus the boat building and even the boat building courses as a new business using the package on offer. Rather than supply my used machine and software as I will still need it for other projects, I will supply new versions of the machine I use and TurboCAD drawing software and Vectric Vcarve. The software allows 3d cutting so you could produce other items too. As an example, I make my own paddles, yokes, oars, oar locks, cleats, deadeyes and wooden sailing blocks etc. for the kits. You could do the same and more as there are many things you can make with the CNC machine. It has been the best purchase I made and has been so reliable I couldn't recommend it or the company that supplied it highly enough.

 

As mentioned, also included and after the sale is basic training by way of a 3 – 5 day boat building course at my small workshop, This will give training on the CNC machine, software, mini kit production, and then building them. It includes supplier information for materials, packaging, shipping etc and where to advertise. Accommodation is included for 2 - 4 nights (no meals) and the materials to produce 2 example mini kits, one stitch & tape and one clinker ply, and then guide you through the builds for them to show both methods of boat building used in these designs. However, if you want to do this at your or another location, my travel and overnight expenses will be added at cost depending where it is.

 

Finally, any design amendments you might want for the designs within 3 months of the sale drawn up free of charge with ongoing support advice as needed for the first year or so. You will be able to tap into my 35 years experience of designing and building boats, kit design and production and advising customers with their build while you get your business off the ground. And, of course, any enquiries for kits or complete boats I get will be forwarded to you.

 

I normally charge from £450 up to £750 for a new design which includes the design time and producing the drawings for DIY plans and kits as required. The designs licences on offer here are worth more than that as they are all tried and tested designs having already been sold as DIY plans, kits and complete boats for many years. This business is easily relocatable and could be set up from your garage or small workshop.

 

Some of the dinghy kits have a sail kit option which will be included but you will need to source a sail maker as mine is no longer in business. I designed a rig option that is standard for all my 8' designs with a sailing option.
